Bath & Body Works Anti-Bacterial Gentle Foaming Hand Soap
Bath is a city in the county of Somerset in South West England, known for its Roman-built baths. In 2011, the population was 88,859. Bath is in the valley of the River Avon, 97mi west of London and 11mi south-east of Bristol. The city became a World Heritage Site in 1987.
The city became a spa with the Latin name Aquae Sulis (“the waters of Sulis”) c. AD 60 when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the River Avon, though hot springs were known even before then. Bath Abbey was founded in the 7th century. Several other significant buildings were constructed in the medieval period including York Minster. The city was captured by the West Saxons in 577 after the Battle of Deorham; it was recovered by the Mercians under King Penda in 645 and later became part of Wessex.
Bath was recorded in the Domesday Book as a borough in 1086. A substantial amount of fabric dating from this time has been observed during works to date and is consistent with other archaeological evidence. The town became a bishopric in 1090 and grew rapidly after that. The Abbey Church was rebuilt starting about 1090 as a cruciform Norman building (in the Romanesque style) following damage caused during William II’s siege while he was fighting his brother Robert II over control of England; work continued until around 1120.
In 1230 an earthquake caused severe damage to much of the town centre; no major repairs were carried out until the early 16th century when Bath Cathedral was largely rebuilt. By about 1550 most houses had been rebuilt using local limestone ashlar masonry and many had domestic or commercial ranges on upper floors which overhung the street below; these were supported on timber-framed jetties.
During the 17th century, civil war split England into two factions: Royalists (Cavaliers) supporting King Charles I, and Parliamentarians (Roundheads) led by Oliver Cromwell. Between October 1642 and March 1643, Bath was occupied by Parliamentary troops loyal to Cromwell; however, Royalist troops retook it shortly afterwards and held it until July 1645 when Parliamentary forces once again gained control of the city. These wars caused great economic hardship for Bath and much damage to its buildings; many of which were not repaired until well into the 18th century.
